Firstly, you have to download Mxit onto your mobile phone (registration is free). You’ll be asked to choose a Mxit ID which is the name you will use to log in with. It’s also the name your friends will use when they want to add you as a contact. SurfRyd3r, D1veBomba or pix3lboy – this is your chance to express yourself. Your Mxit ID can also be your cellphone number if you like (you will need to enter the international format so a number registered as 0721234567 will need be logged as 27721234567). Also, naturally, suggestive names like ladylove or hotgirl give out a certain message, so use your discretion here.

Once you’re signed up, you will land on the Home page. There are a few Mxit contacts here like Info, Tradepost, Shop, Wallet, Gallery, Settings, Games, Chat Rooms and more. These are just different ways of interacting within Mxit itself for different reasons. You will need to add friends who are also on Mxit before you can start chatting to each other.

Find your friends on Mxit using their Mxit ID, phone number, name or e-mail address and we will help you get connected faster.

Click “add contact” and enter your friend’s Mxit ID (you need to ask your friend for these details). They will get an invitation from you which they can accept, reject or block. This also means that no one can add you as a contact without getting your permission first. If you do not get a response from your contact or friend it is because this person has not accepted your invite or has blocked you.

Yes, you can upload your entire phonebook and we will search for friends already using Mxit. All you have to do is choose who you want to invite.

In addition to chatting one-on-one with close friends, you can also meet like-minded people in one of the many Mxit Chat Zones. These Chat Zones have chatrooms where groups of up to ten people can share a conversation at the same time. An application like Mxit (different to WAP sites) relies on a stable connection to work efficiently. Getting disconnected can be caused by high latency during peak times (imagine trying to push ten people through one door at the same time). You could try to disable your handset’s 3G settings and switch to 2G to test the connection.

• Agree to a daily time limit. This will help your child to feel empowered while limiting the time they spend on the platform. You can monitor this limit using your Mxit.

• Talk to your child about the dangers of engaging with people who they do not know.
• Check your child’s contact list regularly and if there is someone who makes you feel uncomfortable, discuss it openly with your child.
• Remind your child that they should never, under any circumstances, agree to a private offline chat with a stranger.

To make paying with small change easier, Mxit has developed a virtual currency called Moola. Users buy Moola upfront and use it as payment to enter chat zones or buy games, music, wallpapers and skins. The value of one Moola is equivalent to one cent of South African currency, i.e. R3 equals 300 Moola.
