About Us
With passion, determination and good coffee anything is possible. At World of Avatar we harness the energies of mobile phone visionaries to initiate positive change in Africa, the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world. We believe in the Mxit revolution. Chat. Play. Trade. Three small steps towards more integrated communications, sharing smile(y)s and building better lives.
Culture
Those who don’t believe in doing the impossible do not belong at the World of Avatar. Here we are committed to creating a new reality of possibility, solving tired old problems in innovative ways. Our aim is to spark ripples of positive change that help to build a better world. One our kids can thrive in.
As investors we do this by getting involved with companies that develop mobile phone applications with the aim to improve quality of life for Africans. By starting on our own continent and making a difference in the lives of millions we can be assured that the returns we make, matter.
The fact that our employees are smiling makes us proud. We don’t keep office hours, yet our offices often buzz around the clock. Our people are intrinsically motivated and know how to balance work and play. This is good because in our experience all truly constructive effort comes from a place of harmony.
At the World of Avatar we don’t let the outside world affect our inner reality. Instead, we initiate change by harnessing the communal dream of a group of visionaries. At any given time you might find us at our desks, at the bar, or simply enjoying the African sunshine. We’re here to think big and have fun.
We want our mobile phone applications to contribute towards a more open, communal and supportive world. Whatever we do, wherever we are, this is always brewing at the back of our minds. We live by respect; for each other, for our users and for the world around us. We care about the little things.
We challenge the status quo.
History
A long, long time ago when phones were not yet smart and social media was only a glint in the eyes of clever youngsters the people of Africa hungered after new innovations. The cost of SMS was sky high and network operators behaved like fat clouds simply passing over arid earth. Developers dreamed of the majestic land of GPRS and mobile games and free instant messaging raining down on the vast mountains and plains.
In the university village of Stellenbosch, developers started building text based mobile games. They sent space ships off into the galaxies and made Mbuni the Ostrich jump and duck his way through the Kalahari Desert. Although high cost SMS caused failure upon failure, the developers marched confidently in the direction of possibility.
There was only one thing amiss. Money was not dripping from the golden comb. So chatrooms were beaten together to create paid spaces for sharing ideas and connecting with others. New mobile games were built from the timbers of inspiration and music downloads was spun. Soon special skins and smileys filled the vessels of abundance.
Sadly, slowly, Mxit started disappearing into the mists of time.
Mxit rose majestically above the mountains, like a phoenix from the ashes. Investment from World of Avatar gave Mxit the protection to continue safely serving multimillions of Africans. Fresh ideas blew softly through fertile minds and secure mobile payments shone brightly. All was at peace.
At last they reached the edge of a breakthrough and then pushed forth to discover a new world called Mxit. It was just as they had imagined. People could communicate at a fraction of the cost of an SMS.
A dark force loomed on the horizon. It blamed Mxit for a whole host of problems in Africa and the bad news gained more and more momentum until it reached gale force and wreaked havoc on this wondrous new world where free mobile communication flows strongly. For years, bad luck seemed to plague Mxit.
It was at this precise moment when Mxit was discovered by a new inspired people known as World of Avatar. This group of visionaries quickly rehashed the collective memory of believers and started working at the quarries of revolution. Invader operations were felled to preserve a free instant messaging platform, for Africans, by Africans.
